Core Values

Our History

Oceanex, and predecessor companies, has been providing service to Newfoundland and Labrador for more than 100 years. The company originated in 1909 when a service to Corner Brook was started and was followed by calls at St. John’s in 1949.

A Major Transportation Provider was Formed

Oceanex was formed in 1990 through the merger of Atlantic Container Express Inc. of Montréal and Atlantic Searoute Limited Partnership of Halifax. In 1991, a marine terminal operator in Newfoundland merged its operations into Oceanex, creating a major integrated transportation infrastructure provider in Atlantic Canada. Oceanex has grown considerably since 1991, having achieved a number of significant milestones over the years, all focused on providing a reliable service to our clients.

Facilities and Ships

In 2001, Oceanex proudly opened a state of the art terminal building in St. John’s, bringing its entire operations staff into one facility. This included the maintenance, pier operations, trucking, safety, and administrative teams, which created positive synergies. Just a few years later in 2005, the Oceanex Avalon, a newly constructed container ship was added to the Oceanex fleet, reinforcing our commitment to on-time once weekly service from Montreal to St. John’s. Its speed and ice breaking capabilities have generated significant improvement to customer service levels.

In 2006, Oceanex purchased a Liebherr Mobile Harbour Crane to improve the efficiency of vessel loading and discharge. Today, Oceanex boasts three (3) cranes of this type at its terminal in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, greatly improving its productivity and efficiency.

One of the most significant developments in recent years was the addition of the Oceanex Connaigra, which is the largest Canadian flagged ConRo ship in the country. One of the most environmentally friendly ships in the world, the Oceanex Connaigra was custom designed to provide a continuous, year-round efficient service to the province operating on a fixed weekly schedule.

Committed to Newfoundland and Labrador

In 2007, the company, which had been operating as an income trust, was privatized and the new ownership, led by Managing Partner, Captain Sid Hynes, is focused on building Oceanex to become the most successful transportation company in Eastern Canada. Since that time, Terminals II & Terminal III were opened in St. John‘s, greatly enhancing the dispatch of cargo from St. John’s throughout the province – this is equivalent to about 50% of all cargo brought to the island. Furthermore, the company expanded its service offering in 2009 when it began providing offshore crewing services to international drilling companies and in 2015 with the introduction of Oceanex Global Logistics (3PL) service.

Through the years, Oceanex has been recognized by many clients and organizations for its commitment to providing exceptional customer service. Some of these honours include:
